Twitter Advertising? Twittad is not the answer…

Posted on 22. Oct, 2008 by Chad in Social Media, twitter

twitterbird So there have been a few stabs at trying to figure out how to get advertising rolling in and around twitter.

One company twittad allows users to sell re-skins on their home page twitter account.   The obvious flaw with that model is, who really reads twitter through individual pages?  I don’t really know the percentage, but basic logic will tell you that number is pretty low.  One of the basis of twitters’ success is the ability to read updates from pretty much any mobile device and tonnes of 3rd party apps.  If you take a look at the few purchases on twittad they are mainly the company themselves, and at around 10 bucks with 1000 followers, why bother?

So what is the answer to the microblogging advertising problem?  A ’sponsored by’ line at the end of updates?  Or even a micro dot that is not readable, but clickable.  Just a tiny pixel that can be sponsored and clicked on.  If readers know it is there, they may come to look forward to something new to click on each day.

    Chad,

Thanks for writing about Twittad. We have heard great response from several advertisers, including ourselves who have purchased ads in the last few weeks and have witnessed a increase in traffic both on Twitter and on their websites.

Also, the ad is served on other 3rd party applications/sites like on http://www.twitwall.com. Example; please see http://www.twitter.com/smallbizbee and then see http://www.twitwall.com/view/?who=smallbizbee. Same ad..served on 2 sites equals increased eye balls on the ad.

We are working with several opportunties right now to provide statistics on ad views, etc. Stay tuned.

Well finally i find a thought that’s just like mine. That’s why i don’t use twittad yet.

Now the question is what is perfect way to monetize twitter? Or there is no opportunity to monetize twitter?

    Hey Deka,

Thanks for dropping by! I think twitter will eventually figure out a way to montize, but it might be with subscriptions and not advertising.

Hey I noticed you are from Bali! I used to live there for 3 years. Apa Kabar? I miss Bali, what a beautiful place.

Hey James, thanks for stopping by. I missed your comment as it was caught in Akismat due to the links you added.

I’m all for the little guy coming up with inovative ways to sell online ads, so even though I don’t think your on the right track yet, I’m rooting for you.

    Cheers.

It is somewhat difficult to see how advertising could get mixed into Twitter usage as it is all about one-line updates of occurrences. The placement of the ads would have to be in the same line as the updates to have a large effect, but that would be too invasive. Ads around the Twitter site might work, but they wouldn’t be connected with the updates.

I think the microdot is a great idea but I think what they could do is send out a newsletter with advertisments within that.

I like twittad, but they still need to work on the system a little more.
